FAQ for Individuals and Families

  • What are the differences between HMO's, PPO's, POS's, HSA's, and other plans?
The biggest differences in these plans are the doctor and hospital networks that they are a part of. You can go to the Tools section of this web site to get detailed explanations of each plan, but here is a basic summary. HMO's have a more limited network, and you must go through a primary doctor for all your care. PPO's tend to have better networks and there is at least some coverage out of network. POS's have out-or-network benefits but in most cases you have to go through a primary doctor. HSA's have high deductibles but allow you to put tax free money from your paycheck into an account that must be used for healthcare expenses.
  • How do I make sure that my plan covers what I want covered?

  • What is a deductible?
A deductible is an amount of money that you have to pay out of your pocket before your coverage begins. For example, if you have a $500 deductible on your plan, you would have to pay for the first $500 worth of medical care until your policy gave you coverage. Some deductibles only apply to certain services so you may not have to pay your deductible for things like going to your doctor. Make sure you look at your plan benefits and if you are still confused please give us or your insurance company a call.
  • What is coinsurance?
Coinsurance means that you are responsible for a certain percentage of your healthcare costs. For example if you had a plan that had 80/20 coinsurance that would mean that you are responsible for 20% of your healthcare costs for the services outlined in your plan.
  • What is a copay?
A copay is a set dollar amount that you must pay for a service. For example, if your copay is $20 to see your primary doctor you will have to pay $20 to see your doctor.
  • What is the difference between in-network and out-of-network?
Every insurance company has a network of doctors and hospitals. If you get care within your insurance companies network it is often much cheaper. In fact, HMO plans usually have no coverage out of the network, and very few PPO plans will give you the same coverage in the network compared to out of the network. Take a close look at your benefit summaries before you get any out of network care.
  • When does my coverage start after I buy my health insurance?
Your health insurance coverage will begin as soon as the effective date that is supplied on the application as long as it fits within the insurance companies guidelines. In most cases you will be limited to starting your coverage on the 1st or 15th of the month.
